Synopsis

Exploration of masculinity begins with the Minotaur, a mythical creature Picasso used to portray himself in his etching print series. The Minotaur goes through a violent struggle between being male and female. Finally, lines blur and boundaries of sexes disappear.

Director's Comment

I was inspired by seeing Picasso’s series of etchings known as the Vollard Suite. This work reflects Picasso’s erotic and artistic obsession through the figure of the minotaur who can’t control his own violent, cruel and intense masculinity. The work presents ceaseless depictions of a minotaur devouring a woman, and this made me curious about the mindset of this male artist who was self-observant, supremely confident, and even self-destructive. Even as I envied the authoritative and prolific Picasso, I was uncomfortable with the toxic masculinity and misogyny that was so prevalent in his work and life. These conflicting emotions inspired by Picasso’s Vollard Suite became the driving force behind the creation of Eyes and Horns.
