Tomoki MISATO: A World of Innocent Heroes and Bittersweet Villains

Director Tomoki Misato is a two-time winner of the ASIA ROAD Audience Award. In 2016, his graduation film [Look at Me Only] earned the award in its very first year, and in 2018, his graduate school thesis film [My Little Goat] brought him a second win. Having captivated audiences since his student days, he wasted no time after graduation building one commercial hit after another, becoming a leading force in Japanese stop-motion animation.

From [PUI PUI Moruka], featuring a guinea-pig-car that runs on vegetables instead of gasoline, to Netflix's stop-motion series [My Melody & Kuromi], Sanrio's beloved characters brought to life in stop-motion for their 50th and 20th anniversaries, to the new film [Candy Caries], starring a girl with a sweet tooth and a tooth-decay bacteria — the felt-and-acrylic characters across his work look adorable but pack surprisingly dynamic action. Protagonists so good they're almost annoying, and villains so flawed yet oddly pitiable, are another signature charm of Tomoki Misato's films.
