Synopsis

The world has been devasted by nuclear war. The poisoned ecosystem is in wastes, and there are few signs of life left on Earth. In the ruins of a forgotten city, a girl named Mari chances to find a broken robot soldier called M626.

Director's Comment

[Green Light] began with an idea inspired by [The Man Who Planted Trees] (1987), a short animation made by the French-born Canadian animator Frederic Back (1928-2013). When I began working on this film, I thought of a rusted robot that plants trees in the ruined earth all by itself. Perhaps the character of Elzeard Bouffier, an old man who plants trees in a barren land, made me think of an old, rusted robot. Great change can be made in the world by ordinary people who are not heroes with extraordinary powers, or one person’s tireless efforts. This idea and the image of a tree-planting robot were the main concepts with which I set out to make a sci-fi film. I asked myself how this world became a wasteland and why a robot was left by itself to plant trees for many years. By answering questions such as these, I gradually fleshed out the story.
[Green Light] is a tale of the worst that can happen when a technologically advanced civilization abuses its knowledge and the main characters – a girl and a robot soldier – who try to restore the world. The robot represents the height of mankind’s scientific achievements. It is indifferent to morality and beyond the dichotomy of good and evil. It can be a force for destruction or salvation, depending on the user’s will. In a desperate world where mankind has fallen, the girl named Mari tries not to lose hope as she plans a new future, and the robot soldier M626 is granted a second life thanks to Mari. In this film, I wanted to tell the story of their friendship and the new world that these two are building.
