Synopsis
It’s a day in a company that specializes in shredding. The multinational staff doesn’t concentrate on the work. Instead, the workers are busy with their personal paperwork, like writing letters of resignation, preparing divorce papers, and making vacation plans. They hesitate or make their reports to their boss with great difficulty, then shred their papers. Suddenly, coffee gets spilled on the shredder, causing it to break, and the cat repairman uses magic to fix it. Then, something strange happens inside the shredder.
Director's Comment
While there are languages from over ten different countries in the film, the story ironically unfolds in a paradoxical situation that shows the imperfect nature and duality of language. The script was written and then recorded with people from various countries around the world. It uses language that is at once completely irrelevant and yet also fitting for the situation. The figurative expressions that we use often in our everyday lives are shown through the actions and shapes of the puppets. But the puppets were also used to capture the exhaustion, embarrassment, and unfamiliar feelings that we experience in interpersonal relationships. At the end of the film, when the broken shredder is repaired and all the employees leave, the voice that is heard from inside the shredder at night speaks in German and says, “I can say anything I want. None of you know German.” The piece of meat shaking inside the shredder is suggestive of a human tongue. The final dialogue and the tongue-like shape suggest that words can never be completely destroyed or made to disappear— malicious comments, urban myths, and other examples of misinformation or reinterpretation can become narratives that take on a life of their own.
