Synopsis

The phenomenon of the Apostle's lack of reason and affection, which was ruined by his strict upbringing and his parents' aloofness, is not uncommon among modern students. We all recognize that a significant number of students feel pressured to suppress themselves and try to fit in, in order to meet parental expectations or social conditions. I think we've all been there at one time or another, when we've been forced to put aside our own feelings and act to meet the expectations and desires of others. School or academy, a study hall...The idea of students voluntarily or involuntarily forcing their bodies into a square, confined space inspired me to create this work.

Director's Comment

Images of [Square in the Blind Spot] are designed based on traditional Korean art. The animation depicts the “Scholar's Accoutrements (The picture shows books, ceramics, stationery, incense burner, and bronze ware on the inside of the desk),” which was loved by people of all statuses in the past, and expresses the psychology of the crown prince Sado, who were frustrated in the Imohwabyeon. Desperate to be accepted by parents, the crown prince Sado and examinees in modern age strive to crumple themselves into a square shape to become part of the Scholar's Accoutrements or show the highest score. The hole in their hearts grows bigger and bigger, and even when they get good grades, the hole in their hearts is not filled. A huge hole is formed in the crown prince Sado's heart, and the lack of affection for his father, Youngjo, turns into anger. The modern student is also assimilated by the crown prince Sado's anger and becomes emotionally disturbed. Unlike Sado, who is trapped in the Rice Chest, the examinee who has a good father comes out of the study box, as if cutting off the past wrongdoings.
