Synopsis

Hélène, 40 years old, comes to visit her aging mother in the French countryside. But her mother isn't being her usual self. She seems to have formed a strange bond with the plants, insects, and the old oak tree at the end of her garden...

Program Note

The woman with deep olive eyes and similarly colored earrings visits a house filled with potted plants. The white-haired woman has her daughter’s eyes. She cares more about caring for her plants than her own life. The daughter doesn’t approve of her mother’s behavior. At night, the insects in the field hold hands and dance while the mother has become one with a tree, growing taller and taller. This scene reminds us of the magical night seen in [My Neighbor Totoro]. The cycle of birth, growth, and returning to nature portrays the sorrow of a necessary parting in a beautiful way.
