Synopsis

[thóo-kong-á] is a stop-motion short film centered on the Taiwanese tradition of “bone collecting.”
The story follows a boy who was raised by his grandfather, a professional bone collector. Since childhood, he was often asked to help with the ritual, though he never understood its meaning — only finding it exhausting and unpleasant.
But through repeated experiences, he gradually comes to see that bone collecting isn’t something taboo — it is a gentle, meaningful practice. It’s a way for the living to say a proper farewell to the dead.
In the end, with newfound understanding and respect, he personally performs the final bone collecting for his grandfather.

Program Note

Our attention is first drawn to the remains of the old man dressed neatly and lying down. The film goes against our usual expectations of highly efficient funeral procedures. The main character carefully removes the dust on the pieces of bone and places them in the container wrapped in red cord. In these scenes and others, the film shows us that life does not only mean living and breathing in the present tense. Rather, the bones which symbolize death are handled with ceremony and care as they intersect with the abstraction of memory to make way for new life. The past drifts anew while the future shines a small light for us.
