Indie-AniFest 2019 received 57 submissions for the Independent Walk competition. The members of the jury were delighted by the wide variety of themes and techniques, including autobiographical work, social dramas, and experimental animations. We were excited to see the current state and future direction of Korean independent animation.
Today, we are witnessing great changes in the film and media industry with the emergence of diverse new platforms. This year's preliminary selection revealed that individual artists within the wider sphere of independent animation are thinking intensely about the changing media environment. In some submissions the medium was more evident than the form and content, while in others the characteristics of new media were used to deliver the artist's message in a meaningful and entertaining way. There were also works that retained their own individual style regardless of the changes in the wider world.
Now, it is time for the independent animation world to consider its views and attitudes toward this era of great change. The emergence of new media gives hope to independent creators seeking alternatives to systems of creative production and distribution centered on the cinema. Whether or not these changes will truly lead to new opportunities for independent animation is an important topic for discourse at Indie-AniFest 2019.
We wish to offer our gratitude and encouragement to the filmmakers whose works were not selected and congratulate those whose films were chosen for this year's competition.
