◈ Indie-AniFest 2019 ASIA ROAD Selection Comments ◈
Diversity remains an important topic in the field of animation and beyond. The members of this jury are past the prime of our youth and at an age when we are expected to stick to our own dry philosophies. However, we are also pushed to question how we view and measure works against our personal standards while also looking through the ever-changing lens of diversity. In 2019, 591 diverse animations were submitted to Indie-AniFest’s 4th Asia Road Competition. Even before we received the list of submissions, we felt the weight of our responsibility. While viewing hundreds of animations, we must weigh the importance of diversity against our own personal tastes. Only after finding a balance between the two can we view and consider each animated film.

Some films espoused the intensely personal while others shared broadly relatable experiences that enticed a faint smile from the viewer. Some made us wonder whether the collective experiences of individuals belonged to the narrative of a nation, or if the opposite were true. At times, our hearts were numbed by a pointed critique of social issues, reminding us of the indifference of the world as experienced by women or commenting on the roles that we play to keep families together. We were struck by the large number of films that looked beyond the individuals making up our humanity to define the relationships that draw us together. The incredible diversity of experiences from across regions, ages, and genders was intersected by a single stream. It was the idea that we are all human and have the capacity for empathy, sweeping us along like a river and show us the possibility of a beautiful world.
As always, we enjoyed animated films that had a certain childlike innocence. Meanwhile, some animations pushed the boundaries of the genre and offered a new understanding of the concept of time, while others awakened our senses through a heightened visual experience. Although we hoped to see the future direction of VR animation, sometimes the simple charm achieved through movement and change was enough to satisfy us as viewers.

Making our selection among so many fine films with diverse merits was like picking up a series of beautifully wrapped presents only to return them one after the other. Throughout our discussions, the members of the jury kept the principles of diversity in mind while respecting each other’s opinions. At times, the sound of jury members leafing through their papers rattled our ears and emotions. At times, a jury member’s heartfelt reasoning brought on hotter emotions in the early summer heat. After careful consideration, 35 animations were selected for the competition, and they will surely draw in the viewers and invite their applause. However, the films that were not chosen left us with a heavy heart, since we can easily imagine the hard work and toil with which they were made. Ultimately, we are grateful for all the wonderful animations that were submitted to the competition.

Seeing through the lens of diversity is important, but sometimes we need only peel back a thin layer to reveal an endless kaleidoscope of collisions. The hardworking directors who continue to make animations today deserve both words of encouragement and comfort. You have given us a glimpse into your thoughts and your lives, and it is our honor to introduce your work to a wider audience.
